Cold Weather and Transportation Reminder for 2024

Cold weather and transportation reminders for 2024: The Caring Place is able to provide Cold Weather Shelter to unhoused families with children enrolled in a school district within The Caring Place service area. When Austin activates its cold weather/warming center protocol, TCP is able to provide gas, Uber, or CARTS vouchers (when available) for those in our service area experiencing homelessness to get to the designated staging area.

Please note that limited shelter (hotel) assistance remains available throughout the year to victims of crime, natural disasters, those assessed to be medically fragile and those with a plan for stable housing, with proof of that crisis. These situations are assessed individually.

Transportation assistance (gasoline and Uber gift cards) is only available to families with a verifiable medical appointment or job interview and with proof of residency. As noted above, transportation assistance cards are available to those seeking cold weather shelter in Austin when shelters are activated due to weather.

Please contact Programs and Services at 512-943-0700 for more information regarding these programs. You may also visit the department at 2001 Railroad Avenue, 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday for information or to initiate services.

For further information about TCP’s full services, please visit caringplacetx.org/gethelp. For information about access and activation of Austin’s Cold Weather Shelter, call the Cold Weather Shelter Hotline at 512-972-5055.
