TWO Assistant Retail Managers (Full-Time)

Purpose of the job:  To help fulfill the mission of The Caring Place which is “To provide for the basic human needs of all people in our community in a welcoming, respectful, and caring way”. This position supports the Caring Place mission by providing leadership within its retail operations. The Assistant Retail Manager is responsible for supporting all aspects involved in the seamless function of our thrift stores. This position must be prepared to provide support where needed at either store to ensure continuity of leadership and customer service including effectively and appropriately responding to staff, volunteer, and customer concerns in a timely manner. The Assistant Manager is the primary support for the Store Retail Manager in the maintenance of a welcoming and positive work environment, processing of merchandise in all departments, directing, training, and supervising staff and volunteers.   

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  •  Know the Caring Place’s history as well as its current programs and opportunities;
  • Effectively interact with staff, customers, and volunteers including solving problems, answering questions, managing concerns and issues, while providing excellent customer service;
  • Know The Caring Place’s history as well as its current programs and opportunities;
  • Effectively lead and contribute to the fulfillment of The Caring Place mission;
  • Have a thorough knowledge of all departments and be able to train volunteers in each one;
  • Fulfill the duties of the Retail Manager when directed;
  • he Caring Place’s history as well as its current programs and opportunities;
  • Supervise activities of staff, and volunteers as appropriate;
  • Possess a thorough knowledge of all Caring Place policies and procedures with an ability to train others;;
  • Work in collaboration with the Volunteer Coordinator to communicate with volunteers on the store team, identify volunteer needs in all departments, and  effectively onboard and support new volunteers;
  • Schedule all volunteers, including cashiers, to ensure all operations of the stores operate smoothly and consistently
  • Create a welcoming environment for volunteers and customers;
  • Maintain a neat, well-maintained store and treat every guest with respect and courtesy;
  • Possess a thorough knowledge of all sorting, pricing, and merchandising processes in all departments and be able to train others while maintaining an orderly and clean store;
    • Prepare money for opening assigned;
    • Prepare change bags;
    • Open point-of-sale stations;
    • Maintain adequate supplies for cashiers and for the store, including the pricing areas;
    • When directed, prepare the bank deposit and the Daily Sales Report;
    • Cashier as needed;
    • Close registers at the end of the day;
    • Create or request signage for the stores as directed;
  • Supervise retail associates as needed;
  • Answer and respond to inquiries through the store phone;
  • Possess a clean driving record with the ability to drive an agency truck.

Education: High School diploma required.

Experience and Training

  • Minimum of 2 years of professional customer service experience in a retail environment;
  • At least 2 year of supervisory experience;
  • Experience working with volunteers preferred;
  • Experience handling money, creating daily reports;
  • Computer skills required, knowledge of Excel, Word, Outlook, etc. programs desired;
  • Experience working with individuals and communities of diverse cultures;
  • Fluency in Spanish is a plus.

Work Conditions:  Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors

  • Exhibit a positive and calm demeanor at all times
  • Ability to stand for extended periods of time (up to 8 hours)
  • Knowledge of and adherence to TCP’s Policies and Procedures
  • Frequent stooping, bending, pulling and pushing
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs with assistance  
  • Availability to work flexible hours and days, including Saturdays

  • Ability to work collaboratively with employees and volunteers;
  • Ability to function productively as an individual and part of a team, teamwork is crucial for this position;
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills;
  • Knowledge of the merchandise, antiques and collectibles;
  • Ability to delegate responsibilities and support the work of the volunteers and employees;
  • Ability to organize and manage large projects;
  • Ability to work flexible hours;
  • Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment;
  • Ability to prioritize workload while remaining flexible in the demands of the workday;
  • Ability to maintain professional and emotional maturity;
  • Exercise good judgment at all times.
